GRAMERCY LOFT
a modern renovation grounded in an industrial past
This loft renovation was designed for a young couple starting a family, with the goal of providing generous flexibility while preserving the characteristic openness and atmosphere of loft living. Although the layout remains predominantly open, it was important to maintain the option for separation between public and private areas when desired. A compact bedroom is tucked into one corner of the loft and outfitted with an oversized barn door, allowing it to shift easily from a secluded retreat to an integral part of the larger space.
In the study, the aim was to carve out a room that feels casually distinct from the common area yet still participates in the open plan. The space can be converted into a fully private guest room, supported by a free-standing central cabinet that houses audio/visual equipment while providing the desired subtle separation. A system of twelve-foot-tall sliding panels stacks neatly against the wall when open, then extends to form a full-height partition that bisects the loft. Together with the generous kitchen layout, these elements preserve the sweeping feel of a true loft while allowing the space to be selectively divided as needs change.
