MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS APARTMENT

The kitchen in this Upper East Side apartment was originally a long, narrow, cramped corridor - from a time when the kitchen was treated as a “service area” - and hidden away from view with little regard to comfort or beauty.

Modern lifestyles follow a different pattern, and therefore our aim was to make the kitchen a vital part of a newly combined living area. The wall separating the kitchen from the living and dining rooms was removed. In its place we designed a kitchen island that would be the centerpiece of the space. Clad in dark walnut veneer panels and featuring a beautiful Pietra Cardosa countertop, the island provides space for casual dining or more formal entertaining, and visually separates the kitchen from the living room without actually dividing the space.

In order to keep the island as minimal as possible, the guts of the kitchen were arranged along the rear wall. The cooking area, cabinets, a laundry closet, an integrated refrigerator, and a small bar are all faced with a series of white lacquer panels and doors of varying sizes and orientations which create a surface that is continuous and clean while still active. Finally, a new hardwood floor is used to tie together this now unified, open and light-filled room.
