VILLAGE RESIDENCE
combining two small apartments into one light-filled home
The Village Residence combines two former apartments in a Manhattan building into one expansive home. The renovation unifies the previously divided spaces and clearly defines the public areas, all organized around a floating central core of pale blue lacquer millwork.
Within this core are numerous functions, including storage, electrical, building structure, and a series of operable panels. The public space surrounding the core includes living, dining, kitchen, and a flexible study/guest bedroom that can adapt to changing needs. Operable panels open fully for everyday living and entertaining or close to provide intimacy and privacy for the study, bedroom, and bath areas.
A light perimeter palette allows the color and form of the inner core to register clearly, offering visual cues to movement and spatial organization throughout the apartment. A second phase of work introduces a separate, private wing for the family’s three children, along with a reconfigured entry and generous utility and storage areas.
