VILLAGE RESIDENCE

combining two small apartments into one light-filled home

The Village Residence combined two units in a Manhattan building into one large apartment. Our renovation unified the previously divided spaces and defined the public aspects of the home. The apartment centers around a floating central core of pale blue lacquer millwork.

Numerous functions are contained within the core, including storage, an electrical closet, building structure, and a series of operable panels. The public space around the core includes living, dining, kitchen and a flexible study and guest bedroom.

The operable panels can be opened up entirely for daily use and entertaining, or they can be closed off to provide greater intimacy and privacy for the study, bedroom and bath areas.

The light palette of the rest of the apartment allows the color of the internal core to read clearly, providing visual clues to the intended movement and spatial configurations that are contained within.
